Chapter 19

The Dilemma

By the stern look on Mildred Sims’ face, anyone could see she was deeply troubled as she and Pastor Sims crossed at the light on the corner of Third and Main.

“We must deal with this today, Buford,” she said emphatically to her husband. “People are starting to wonder why Trewleigh Sutton is refusing to come to church,” she added as they turned and walked up Third Street to Ross’s Hardware Store in the middle of the block.

“People wouldn’t make so much of it if she weren’t the grandchild of George and Adaleigh Ross, them being one of the founding families of the Church n’ all.”

Pastor Buford Sims remained silent, letting his wife vent.

“I’ve told you many times that it could come to this, but you cannot leave those young girls alone,” She added. “Now, this one’s got your goat.” She concluded as they approached the storefront.

Putting on her best face, she smiled and waved to Marvin through the sizable display window.

Marvin returned her greeting with a wide grin and started for the door.

‘Those two always dress like they are in church,’ He thought as he noticed Buford Sims' usual dark, vested suit complete with a pocket watch and Mildred’s long woolen coat, print dress, matching navy-blue hat, purse, pumps, and gloves.

“Well, well, well, what a surprise, Pastor Sims, Mrs. Sims,” Marvin greeted them jovially. “Come on in, come right in,” he added, holding the door as they passed through to the store.

“What brings y’all to town on this cold Wednesday morning?” He asked.

“I made me some new café curtains, Marvin,” Mildred explained. “Right, pretty ones, if I do say so myself, and I’ll be need’n some new curtain rods.”

“Yes, ma’am, I have just what you need.”

Mildred followed him to the curtain rod section in the back while her husband stayed by the front counter and cash register.

Marvin Ross was immensely proud of his immaculate store, keeping the well-stocked racks and shelves neat and organized.

Leaving Mrs. Sims to select her purchase, Marvin returned to the front and Pastor Sims.

“You know,” the Pastor gazed about the place. “May he rest in peace. George was as proud as a peacock when you went into business for yourself, Marvin.” He added, looking back at him.

“I must say, you have done well, my boy,” the older pastor started giving him a substantial pat on the back, “yes sir, very well indeed.”

Then after taking a long look at Marvin, he continued. “You know your father, and I stood right where we are standing now on your grand opening.” The pastor said. “On that momentous occasion, he declared that seeing you take hold and do good with your life made the many years of long hours and hard work down at the mill worthwhile.”

“You have chosen well to follow the example of an honorable upstanding man like your father. As you know, son, your father was a pillar of the community. As a tax-paying property owner and family man, he held a good position as the lead supervisor at the mill.
